Seasonal Challenge Championships!

Congratulations to Theresia Griffin, our 2021 RUNegade for All Seasons!

Over the course of our four 2021 seasonal challenges, Theresia Griffin ran 3,171 miles to claim the title of RUNegade for All Seasons! She narrowly beat out Kyle Benjamin, who recorded 2,961 miles. We sat down with Theresia to ask her about her journey.

How did you first hear about our seasonal challenges?
With the pandemic, it was a challenge to have challenges. I found out about RUNegades during the pandemic and did a number of your group runs and races and got to know a lot of people.
That first challenge, in January, my buddy Bundy (Wist) and I were competing against each other. He and I had fun going back and forth. After that, I just wanted to keep supporting RUNegades because you do so much with the community. Also, I love the swag!

How long have you been an ultra-runner?
First, I set out to do a marathon in all fifty states in under four hours. About four years ago, I accomplished that, so I needed a new goal. I decided to try my hand at ultra-running.

What’s your yearly record?
This might have been it.

You were neck-and-neck with Kyle Benjamin for most of the year. Do you know him?
No!  And I felt so bad because sometimes I wouldn’t put my numbers in for weeks at a time and he’d be leading, and then I'd put my miles in and jump him. I ran so many miles--and was doing so many challenges--that recording everything started to feel like a full time job!

What goes through your mind while you're getting in all those miles?
To me, the most beneficial thing about running is having a great group to run with, so I can’t even say that a lot of things go through my mind. It’s more the camaraderie and the friendships that I’ve built. I have a number of good friends who have shared those miles with me, and we’ve had some great conversations—some crazy conversations too--there are some interesting topics that come up while we’re out there.

What will you take away from this year of challenges? What will stick with you?
We’ve shared so much of life out there—the ups, the downs, the celebrations. It’s a running family. Just thinking about that gives me goosebumps.
